"...turning the WORST student drivers n2d BEST!"

Actual students from various local high schools

From all over Sacramento high schools, students describe their experiences in driver's education and driver's training.

They compare Hieu to driving instructors, parents, high school teachers and their classes.  Read on to learn more, especially from Christy Lui of Natomas High and ~*jImAyE* Nguyen of Florin High.

Thank you for teaching me about the basic regulations of driving safely on the road.  Thanks to your unique way of interpreting the textbooks to us, I was able to score a perfect on my permit test.  You taught the class much better than the class in my high school offered.  I know this because I took both.  In your class, I was able to learn stuff faster and easier because you made it fun.  I found the driver’s education class amusing, rather than boring because you were very lively.  You related situations that us teens find entertaining with driving.  Even though they sucked, you used drawings to show some of the rules and ways of driving which helped the visual learners like me learn.  It was surprising that I was able to learn and memorize all that information about driving safely in only two weekends.  I don’t think this would have been possible if I just took the driver’s education class that my high school offered.  My friends that took only a high school’s driver education class flunked their permit test at least once before being able to pass it.  The sad part about this is that they had to go to class five hours every day for three weeks during summer.  I also took the class with them just to see how it was like.  By this time I had already gotten my permit, so I kind of slacked off.  The teacher there was boring and he rarely talked to the class.  He would pass out worksheets that the students had to fill out by looking inside a driver education book.  He didn’t draw any pictures or move around any model cars to show us anything.  Basically the students learned only what they were able to memorize from the worksheets and the movies that he showed.  He went over the tests with us, but unlike you he only told us the answers and did not bother to go in depth in why was that the answer to the question.  I’m glad to have been in your driver’s education class.  I hope you continue to teach there so that in the future I can go to one of your classes for traffic school.  I am driving safely.  It was nice having you as my teacher.

Dear Hieu,

No worries...I was never mad at you..well...maybe on the test date! ;-) But it's all good. I like your personality and I am sooooooo thankful to you for the lessons! You do miracles, literally!!! I still can't believe it took me only 12 hours to learn how to drive! I bought my car in August and drove to Rocklin a week later...so I am not even afraid of the freeway...In fact, I enjoy it! Changing lanes - not so much... but I do drive!!! And I do remember everything you taught me! So, thank you soooooooo much!!!! You are the best! ;-)

Hope you have a wonderful year!!

John F. Kennedy  High School, Traci Lee

Hi Mr. Tran ~  She had a great experience with you in your car for her first driving lesson.  She tells me of your crazy humor and she really felt at ease and wasn't nervous as she thought she might be.  I was surprised that you had her drive on the freeway already.  I'm glad you had that confidence in her driving to approach that for her first lesson.  She is eagerly waiting to continue with her next lesson and is looking forward to the June 26 appointment.  Sincerely,  Mrs. Selise Lee

Hieu, how have you been doing?  I’ve been doing fine.  I did great on my permit test, and now I’m driving around more often.  It’s actually pretty easy to drive.  I thought that it would be scary, especially because the way you kept telling those stories about your past students.

I learned a lot in your class, and I wouldn’t have passed the test without it.  You made the class interesting and fun with jokes and stories because they made me pay attention more.  I have recommended you to many of my peers, and they want to go there for their training.

Well, I just wanted to thank you for such a fun time in your driving class.  I’ll come by and visit soon because my little sister is going to take her class and behind-the-wheel training there.

Sheldon High School, Bruce Mai

Mr. Tran is a great teacher.  He even said it himself.  His jokes and stories were hecka funny.  I laughed a lot in his class.  He made class fun.  His jokes are funny only if you get them.  You’ll love his A’s for “apples,” B’s for “bananas,” and C’s for “coconuts” while correcting tests.

Mr. Tran was not boring; I’m glad I had him as a teacher cuz I passed the permit test the first time.  My friends passed, and this other guy passed as well.  I would recommend Mr. Tran to anyone who doesn’t know how to drive or sucks at driving.  You’re guaranteed to be a great driver.

Sheldon High School, Michael Samaniego

Guess what?  I passed.  Haha.  I beat your score.  I missed two!!  Man, I’m looking forward to having u as my driver training teacher.  I was hella happy that I had you as my education teacher.  You’re the best teacher like out of all my teachers.  I told my cousin about you, and he’s looking forward to having you.

Franklin High School, Yesenia Ramos

Well, I can say it was an awesome class to learn the basics on safe driving.  It was really fun and interesting because every scenario you gave us was something we could relate to, which made it easy to understand.  Your sense of humor and energy to teach created a relaxed atmosphere to learn in.  Unlike other classes, you actually taught the class.  It was a great experience.

Franklin High School, Eileen Estrata

Driver Ed with you and also behind-the-wheel training was great!  You made the class exciting, and also you put comedy and life stories into it, which made it worthwhile!  It was the best experience in a learning process that I’d ever gone through.  You made me learn things in a clear way, and if I was stuck on something you would always find a way to explain it to me.  That was cool.  I heard about Driver Ed. in my high school and most of my friends haven’t even passed their permit test yet, and their classes were up to 2½  months.  I had you in 4 days, and I passed my permit!  For driver training, great teaching!  All the weak spots I had while driving, you helped me perfect them.  Now they aren’t even a challenge for me!  Hopefully, I’ll see you on the road!  Haha!

Franklin High School, Jetson Gong

It wasn’t as boring as I thought it would be.  You made the class really fun, and I must say, I though it was very…interesting the way you taught.  I’m surely going to remember the way I was taught in driver education.  I especially liked the part where you would start making fun of everyone.  I only wished all my classes were just as fun.  You taught in ways I will never forget.  I’d even told a couple of my friends and my own brother to take your class.

Franklin High School, Mai H. Vue

I knew that maybe some people didn’t look forward to going and spending their weekend time of seven long hours in class, but I did.  I thought your class was something great.  I really thank you for making it fun by joking around.  That was something I really looked forward to because every day was something new and no one knew what was going to be next.  To be honest, I didn’t even want to leave after the four days of class.  On the last day, I was like, this is it, it’s the last day, and I won’t be coming back.

Franklin High School, Tina Nguyen

To let you know not only am I driving LEGALLY and so well, but I’m driving a STICK.  I passed the driving test with a 96%.  My experience in your class was a lot of fun.  Your jokes were the funniest!  I know for a fact that if I were to take a different class, I would have been sleeping my butt off.  You were actually able to keep me awake.  You really prepared us.  I was so glad that you were my behind-the-wheel instructor as well.  You had the patience to put up with me and my panicking.  You didn’t even complain!  I had another driving instructor and I honestly hated him.  I just could not put up with him!  You truly are the best.

Elk Grove High School, Dan Nguyen

My experience with Mr. Tran was very interesting.  He was a very enjoyable teacher in the classroom.  He made the Driver's Ed class very entertaining and educational.  I was never really bored, and I learned a lot.

The behind-the-wheel lessons were also very educational.  He took the time to teach me all the little things that other instructors didn’t.  He gave me a lot of driving tips and helped me with my mistakes.

Elk Grove High School, Ryan Mosher

I think that you’re the best teacher ever, whether it be school or anything.  I didn’t take my permit until three or four months after the class.  You make it interesting and fun.  I liked your stories, and they stuck in my head when I was at the DMV.  I only missed three on my test!

Rio Americano High School, Scott White

I had so much fun during my behind-the-wheel training!  I think that you are a very good instructor.  You had a lot of patience with my driving.  Your instructions were always clear and informative, and I liked the fact that you were always humorous; it made me feel more at ease when I drove.  I feel that the time I had spent with you has made me a more confident and successful driver.  Thanks again for the endless patience.

After spending four LONG days at Absolute Best Driving, I have come to see what kind of personality Hieu has.  There is only one word to describe Hieu and that's "TEENAGER."  Although Hieu may look like an adult, he has the personality of a teenager, and that is one of the things that makes him a great teacher.

I don't know how he did it but Hieu made me feel really comfortable in his class, and he didn't intimidate me so much that I was afraid to participate.  There is something unique about Hieu, he LOVES to tell stories!! At first, I didn't see the point of it and how his stories would help me to get closer to getting my license.  But as I learned more about driving, I was able to connect it all.

Leaving the class was hard because for once in my life I felt safe, secure, and at home at a SCHOOL!!  It's sad to wake up in the morning knowing that driving school is over...no more jokes, no more stories, but most importantly, no more HIEU!!!

The name "ABSOLUTE BEST" isn't just a name, it's what the school is.  Keep up the great work, Hieu!!!  You will be teaching my children one day.

I thought driver education was going to be a drag during my spring vacation, but you made it a blast.  You really made sure we learned the information by letting us play fun games and asking everyone of us to read out loud.  You told hilarious stories that related to every lesson.  We laughed AT you, thinking you’re out of your mind.  But when it came down to taking my written test, I could remember the stories you told and find the correct answers.

I was also fortunate enough to have had you for the behind-the-wheel training.  You let me practice quick-action u-turn 10+ times in a row.  I truly think that I would be license-less without you.  Thanks for everything, Hieu!

 Florin High School, Fahm Saelee

I first thought taking driver education was going to be so boring, and that it wasn’t going to be fun all at.   But I was wrong.  You were able to joke around with us and sort of relate to us.  So that is one of the things that stood you out of the teaching crowd.  I was able to enjoy learning without really realizing that I was learning something.

Your teaching method in my opinion is good because we were so comfortable with you, you were able to clown around, and you brought some excitement into a topic that wasn’t so exciting.

As you predicted, yes, I have my permit.  I only missed two!  Thanks!  I told my friends about you.  They said they want to take your class.

Florin High School, Tony Cun

You were a cool guy and a good teacher.  I am driving well and am going to take my driver’s test soon.  I am confident that I will pass—thanks to you.

You were a great teacher both in the classroom and behind-the-wheel.  In class, you taught the materials very well, and you were very funny.  You had a good sense of humor and very knowledgeable about the subject.  You were a very active teacher and made my experience there rather enjoyable.  I’m glad you were my instructor behind-the-wheel because you taught me how to drive correctly and pointed out the things I did wrong.  The lesson with you increased my driving confident.

I want to become a safe driver, and I do think you teach it the best.  I also speak on Thao Pham’s behalf when I say this because she is a close friend of mine who had you as well.  We both hope you will continue to spread your knowledge on driving.

Luther Burbank High School, Pa C. Thao, Sophomore

I was fortunate to be in your class.  You made it an enjoyable time.  In the car, your determination to make me learn how to turn corners correctly made me improved.  Your confidence gave me the courage to drive, even though I know I scared you a couple of times.  You were so calmed that it relaxed my nerves.  I’m glad you didn’t step on the brake on me, like the other instructor did.  That allowed me to have more control of the car.

Luther Burbank High School, Eliza Oun

I liked your class.  It was quite pleasant.  You had a way to keep me interested.  You had all these entertaining stories, especially the story about you as a little boy.  From your teaching, I passed my permit test just like that!  It was so easy because I remembered everything from the class.  You are a great teacher always trying to keep all the students on track, somehow always cracking jokes out of no where, and always trying to help us be a better driver.  THANK YOU!!!

Independent study, Tien Nguyen

Ur class was fun even though u tell jokes and they didn’t’ make sense, they were still funny.  U are a very good teacher, so young but talented.

I don’t regret being in your class.  If I had the chance to be in your class again just to sit there and watch u teach and tell ur jokes, I would.  Now I got my L’s driving.  Thanks a lot for all the stuff that u taught us!

You are the best teacher I have ever known of.  I enjoyed learning the driving skills from you.  You are very meticulous in your ways of imparting the training to students and are extremely patient.  You didn’t make me nervous while taking the lessons, and I always felt confident when I drove with you.  In spite of being so young, you have so much experience in the art of teaching.  I am greatly appreciative about the fact that you placed complete confident and trust in me and my driving ability.  I passed my DMV driving test on my first try with a 100%!  Thanks to you!  I have been suggesting your name to many of my friends!!!
