a. 2006 Statistics (DMV HB) "Nearly half of the drivers between ages 15 and 19 are convicted of a traffic violation in their firs year of driving.  About 50% of all traffic convictions are speed violations (which often results in loss of vehicle control).  Drivers 15 to 19 years old have very high traffic accident, injury, and conviction rates.  Traffic accidents are the leading cause of death for teenagers.  If you are under 18 years old, your risk of a fatal accident is about 2 1/2 times that of the 'average' driver.  Your risk of an injury accident is three times higher than the average driver."

c. Don't "set" yourself up. Do not put yourself into a situation where you cannot do anything (very little) about it.  For example, NEVER tailgate others!  I don't care how quick your reflex is or how good your brake is, it's a matter of time before you get hit.  This WILL happen!  Always signal 5-10 seconds early before you turn to warn the guy behind you.  Never steer while checking your blind spots when lane changing.  Adapt to traffic, not going below or above it.  Brake EARLY so you'll NEVER get hit from behind.  Put your cell phone or any other object away.  These are several examples of "setting" yourself up for an accident.  However, if you do set yourself up, then the only thing you can do by this time is to minimize the consequence of your action.  For example, you're driving down the city streets for awhile and you see a car behind you gaining on you  very fast.  But you still choose to remain in the same lane.  The light turns red, then suddenly green.  You go, but not fast enough because the guy behind speeds up even faster.  At this point, you KNOW you'll be hit and you can't do nothing about that part.  Now what are you to do?  Continue trying to speed up?  Swerve out of the way?  Hit the brake?  Hold tightly onto the steer wheel?  Shift in reverse and attack the predator? Jump out of the car?  :)  Ask yourself how badly do you want to be injured or where do you want to hurt because it will happen, in about 2 seconds!
