a. Is 6 hrs of driving enough for my daughter?  Generally speaking, the answer is NO.  At the end of the 6 hrs, the student is shown the knowledge of what to do.  It doesn't mean she can perfect all the maneuvers shown.  But at least she has the knowledge, and then can reinforce the skills with an adult.  It's like trying to win the state champion in any sports with only 6 practice sessions.  No way.  It's not going to happen.

b. What if my son already knows how to drive?  Yes, but does he knows how to 1) prevent an accident or 2) how to manage risks?  Most importantly, the only driving that counts is the one done under Hieu's supervision (his feedbacks & advice; it is the only way to learn & grow, improve).  No one knows how to drive until they've been taught by Hieu.  He can tell you exactly what you're doing wrong, how you can improve and what are your strengths/weaknesses, when will you progress and the length of time it requires.  There're only two persons who know the secrets of driving: God and Hieu.  The secret of driving lies only in the personal experiences (accumulated through the endless hours of driving and teaching and studying) and insight (self-consciousness of one's action upon one's self and others).

c. How to increase your driving skills without driving.  If you do not drive, then WATCH others drive.  This WILL INCREASE your driving skills tremendously.  See how others steer, how they look over their shoulder, their body moments, their observation of the mirrors and of others around them, how they gas and brake and much more.  Watch, watch, and pretend you're driving.  Imagine yourself in the driver's seat.  Criticize their driving and praise it as well.

d. The pre-driving method.  If you don't have a permit, then you can still drive.  Get into a parked car, press the gas and brake pedals, pretend you're driving.  Hold either pedal all the way down, then half way down.  Press hard, press slowly.  Slide your foot back and forth over either pedal (make sure you "feel" it so that you can control it).  Slightly steer and release the steering.  Get a "feel" for the steering wheel and pedals.  Do this over and over until you think you've "got" it.  This exercise stimulates real driving.  This is better than nothing.  Better than complaining of not being able to drive.

e. What's the ideal driving time for a beginner? If you really suck bad at driving, it's best for you to be on the road when no one is there. That's the obvious.  That time would be on a Sunday morning when most people are either sleeping or in church.  As a result, you have the road to yourself and can make as many errors as you wish (just don't hit a pole or a house!).  The second best time is in the beginning of the week after 7pm when everyone's home having dinner.

f. Where is the best place to drive? South Sacrament is the best place to learn how to drive because of the aggressive nature of the drivers, various types of cars and businesses--it's like a salad bowl: a mixture of all races and type of individuals, rich and poor.  Finally, the structure of the city and neighborhood streets are built for excellent  turning and lane changing and among other things: there're abandon cars, neighbor streets are littered with beat-up cars, furniture's and other household items.   If you can drive in South Sacramento, then you can drive anywhere!

g. How should I schedule my driving lessons?  You can schedule it however you want: three days in a row, once a week, once every other week, once a month or every other month.  You can go as early as 5am or as late as 10pm.  This is according to your preference and availability.  But if you want the best way to go about it, ask your instructor because he knows your strength, weakness and can predict your progress accordingly.

h. What's wrong with "saving" the last lesson before the DMV drive test?  It's like learning the last chapter of calculus on the day or week before the test.  Good luck on acing it.  But if you completed all your lessons in a month's period, then you have plenty of time to hone your driving skills and eventually master them all.
